If the selection says it's an original work, be forewarned that you may encounter rather difficult-to-read scottish dialect! Not to mention unedited, long-winded, victorian preaching....=) I still recommend any work by MacDonald, but especially (for my contemporary US readers) the stories which have been edited by Michael Phillips. Phillips is a Christian, and so has not completely removed the preaching or colorful dialect, but has refined it for modern readers. I found his versions particularly enjoyable.
