This method of watercolor is similar to the wax resist method of dying fabric (batik). A latex masking liquid is applied to outlines and details of the painting as it progresses. Then the liquid mask is rubbed off with an eraser and a final wash of water blends harsh edges. Many layers of color and masking are used to build up the rich texture and deep colors.

This painting is of a teapot I decorated as a young teen, later using it to hold a houseplant. I loved the way the philodendron grew long and wrapped around the pot.
